THE CONTEXT & CHALLENGE
The Consular Association of Washington State is an official organization that brings together the Consular Corps of Washington State and foreign Cultural and Trade Offices, representing 49 countries from Africa, Europe, North, Central and South America, and Asia, through accredited career and honorary consular officials within the state.
Its mission is to facilitate dialogue and collaboration among its members, government entities, and the private sector, promoting diplomacy, trade, cultural exchange, and friendship among nations.
The main challenge stemmed from the previous visual identity, which was heavily inspired by the Washington Capitol. While this symbol is powerful, it created recurring confusion:
many perceived the Association as being based in Washington, D.C., when in fact its scope of action is Washington State.
Although consuls occasionally participate in meetings at the Capitol with senators and political leaders, the majority of the Association’s activities, diplomatic relations, and institutional development take place within Washington State.
This critical and shared element among all members was not being clearly communicated.
The challenge was to redefine the brand’s conceptual axis, eliminate geographic ambiguity, and build an identity that clearly represented the true core of the organization.
THE STRATEGIC APPROACH
The strategy focused on redefining the brand’s core to eliminate geographic ambiguity and reinforce the Association’s true sphere of influence: Washington State.
Through brand analysis and stakeholder context, a central insight emerged: while the Association represents nations from across the world, all consular members are united by a single territory. This shared ground became the foundation of the brand strategy.
The strategic objectives were to:
This strategy reframed Washington State not as a background element, but as the central connector—the place where diplomacy, cooperation, and long-term international relationships are built.
THE ART DIRECTION
The art direction translates the strategic foundation into a clear, institutional, and symbolic visual language.
At the heart of the identity is the Washington State silhouette, used as the primary symbol. Beyond its geographic meaning, the state represents the neutral meeting point where all member nations converge.
Encircling the state, a ring of flags symbolizes the diversity and equality of the countries represented. The circular structure reinforces ideas of unity, continuity, dialogue, and cooperation, ensuring no hierarchy and reflecting the diplomatic nature of the Association.
The typographic system is serif, elegant, and authoritative, reinforcing credibility, tradition, and institutional trust. Its refined proportions ensure legibility and consistency across formal communications and international contexts.
The primary color, green, was taken directly from the Washington State flag to strengthen territorial association and clearly differentiate the identity from federal or Washington, D.C.–based symbolism. Symbolically, green conveys stability, balance, and trust, aligning with the Association’s mission to build strong and lasting diplomatic relationships.
Together, the logo, typography, and color system form a timeless and cohesive identity, firmly rooted in Washington State and designed to represent the Association with clarity and authority on the global stage.
IMPACT
The new identity delivered immediate clarity regarding the organization’s scope and nature, eliminating confusion with Washington, D.C., and reinforcing its strong connection to Washington State.
Key Results
More than a visual redesign, the project established a strategic identity, where Washington State becomes the unifying symbol connecting 49 countries under a shared vision of cooperation, dialogue, and international friendship.

The strategic objectives were to:
-
Clearly position the Association as a Washington State–based institution, not Washington, D.C.
-
Establish a strong and recognizable territorial anchor for all communications.
-
Communicate unity, neutrality, and diplomatic balance among diverse nations.
-
Create a scalable brand system capable of supporting institutional growth, international relations, and official engagements.
This strategy reframed Washington State not as a background element, but as the central connector—the place where diplomacy, cooperation, and long-term international relationships are built.
